Dillon County Historical Society
The History of The Society

The Dillon County Historical Society was organized in 1961 with approximately 250 charter members. General John C. Henegan was the first president. He was instrumental in saving Mr. Dillon's home and converting it to a museum which the Society continues to operate. The Society is an organization that has a mission, which is to preserve the past heritage while looking into the future. While taking pride in our heritage and learning from past history, members can have a part in shaping the future.

The Society restored the 1910s doctor/dentist office in Latta, SC, and in 1996 the restorationw as complete, and The Dillon County Museum opened. It has artifacts related to the Dillon County area. The museum has a document room, restored dentist and doctors' offices (circa 1920s), an agricultural room, military room and rooms containing miscellaneous historic items. There is also a restored railroad caboose which houses railroad artifacts on the property of the museum.

The Society created a "Hall of History on the fourth floor of the beautifully resotred Dillon County Courthouse. It has many historic pictures of the area lining the walls of the hall.

The Society meets three times a year and welcomes visitors and those wishing to join. Prospective members must fill out a membership form and be voted on for membership. Anyone interested in joining the Society can request the form by sending an email to bbar830771@aol.com.
